About

Welcome to The Ruth Experience!
We're glad you're here!

When we walk together as women, we can unleash new possibilities for ourselves—and others. What started with three friends wanting to spend December doing random acts of kindness as families ignited a movement and the publication of their first book, The One Year Daily Acts of Kindness Devotional.

Together, Kristin Demery, Julie Fisk, and Kendra Roehl have written a series of books on kindness, generosity, failure, struggle, loss, a longing for true friendship and an unwavering desire to live intentionally through it all.

They invite others into the conversation through The Ruth Experience, a growing online community of women. Look for a good friend? You’ll find one there—and so much more. It’s where women go to share their real and raw stories, gain encouragement and find belonging.

Why the Ruth Experience? The name "The Ruth Experience" came about many years ago, as we were in the midst of planning to host women's gatherings in our homes. Wanting to give a new, fresh name to a traditional tea-and-testimony night, we began to pray about what we could call these gatherings. We wanted the women who attended to know that each event would be a safe space where they could hear each other's stories of heartbreak or challenge but also of God's faithfulness and redemption. At the time, we were reading through the biblical book of Ruth and it struck us that what we really wanted to recreate was the kinship between Ruth and Naomi that you find in the Bible. Ultimately, it's the story of two women experiencing life together and finding God's redemptive purpose for their lives. Yes, it's a story of heartbreak and loss, grief and pain, and unanswered questions, and yet it's also a story about how God showed up and, through his grace, wove themes of redemption and love through it all. For us, it's the same story you hear today from women who are still walking through this life, experiencing heartache and pain but also recognizing how God ultimately shows himself to be faithful and true. Our prayer is that this online space, like the living room spaces in our homes so many years ago, would be a place where women could walk with one another, hear stories from each other that ring true to their own lives, and be encouraged that God is still at work in the midst of all we face. We're so glad you're here, friends.

And here's a little bit more about each of TRE's contributors:

Julie Fisk left a 15-year-career as a lawyer to follow her childhood dream to become an author. Always passionate about words, she shifted her storytelling from courtrooms and boardrooms to telling stories of God’s faithfulness. Julie is a national speaker and author of several books, including her newest devotional, One Good Word a Day: 365 Reflections to Encourage, Deepen, and Refine Your Faith

Together with her co-founders of The Ruth Experience, Julie connects with thousands of women online seeking and living out their faith. When she’s not writing or speaking, Julie is a backyard farmer, a collector of cookbooks and coffee mugs, and an admitted bookworm.

Do it afraid. It’s that advice that Kendra Roehl first sought to live out as a social worker, foster parent, mother of five, public speaker and author.

She earned a master’s degree in social work and naturally became a defender of those in need, serving others through hospice, low-income housing and veteran affairs programs. Kendra and her husband have become well-known advocates for foster care, taking in over 20 children in six years, and adopting three of them.

She continues to care for others on their journeys as a frequent speaker, a founder of The Ruth Experience and an author of five books, including 100 Days of Kindness.

When she’s not keeping up with her kids’ activities or taking in the outdoors, she’s engrossed in real-life crime television shows like Dateline and 48 hours. Her favorite times are those moments when she’s listening to other people’s stories, preferably with coffee in hand. You can also find Kendra contributing regularly at A Wife Like Me.

A career in journalism set up Kristin Demery to publish her own stories of living this wild, precious life. She is now an author of five truth-telling books, including the latest One Year Daily Acts of Friendship Devotional, and part of a trio of writers collectively known as The Ruth Experience.

Kristin served as a newspaper and magazine editor and her work has been featured in a variety of publications, including USA Today. She still works behind-the-scenes as an editor for others while writing her own series on kindness, friendship, and living with intention. She's also a regular contributor at The Better Mom and on the print editorial and devotional teams at The Joyful Life Magazine.

A Jane Austen addict and lover of fiction, Kristin would read a book every day, if she could. At home, you’ll find her watching reality TV competitions, indulging in chocolate, and joining her husband and three daughters in checking items off their family bucket list.

Statement of Faith:

  • There is one true God, eternally existent in three persons: the Father, the Son (Jesus), and the Holy Spirit.
  • The Bible is the inspired, infallible, and authoritative written Word of God. God’s truth, character and ultimate rescue plan for humanity is revealed throughout the entirety of scripture.
  • Following Jesus goes beyond the boundaries of denominational, cultural, and racial lines. As believers, we are part of one Church, the bride of Christ.
  • Jesus is the only source of abundant life. Humanity is searching for hope, life, and fulfillment. Nothing will permanently satisfy the desires of human hearts apart from God.
  • Every person is on a faith journey. Faith and understanding is grown through spiritual wrestling, prayer, and godly counsel as we are led by the Holy Spirit. We believe it’s OK to ask tough questions as we seek Jesus together.
  • Women are valued and powerful in God’s Kingdom. Jesus first revealed himself to the woman at the well, included women in his travels, and chose a woman to announce his resurrection. We are active participants in His kingdom right now.
